Cortlandt Manor – A Place With History

Cortlandt Manor – A Place With History

Cortlandt Manor is located within the Town of Cortlandt in Westchester County, and it is a hamlet situated to the north of Croton-on-Hudson. The majority of the area is comprised of residential homes, and Cortlandt Manor incorporates Cortlandt Estates, a bucolic neighborhood of upscale dwellings that are situated on gently sloping properties encircling a large lake.

Its name comes from the Revolutionary War period when the region was split into six sections called manors, Cortlandt Manor taking its moniker from the van Cortlandt family. Though it has its own zip code now, it once shared a postal designation with Peekskill. Visitors today can visit the original, historic home of the Cortlandt family, the estate of Stephanus Van Cortlandt, colonial, aristocrat, and patroon – a person given land grants and privileges under provisions of the law while under Dutch colonial rule in the early to mid-1600s.

Students have access to various educational institutions, including Hendrick Hudson Central, Putnam Valley Central, and Lakeland Central School Districts. Cortlandt Manor has been home to several notable people, including Aaron Copland, American composer, Jackie Gleason, television actor and comedian, Bob Baldwin, jazz musician, and John Abercrombie, guitarist.
